The Sunlight Summer’s End Collection releasing at the Edmonds Art Walk - Thursday, September 17th 5-8pm.
Join us for this collection release commemorating the Summer’s end. Expect brand new originals and prints from Laura Burkhart and Devin Larson, wine, light bites and a special photo op with Polaroids to capture the moment.
We keep trying to arrive, to simply be, and to ground in to the present. To actually be here, hands open, nothing between us and the moment, to be fully immersed in the here and now.
But part of finding that deep presence is also noticing how spectacular it all truly is. It is witnessing its magic and wanting to savor it, to slow it down, and pin it into place. So we reach for a camera, a journal, a paintbrush - a way to keep it, to freeze it in time and pack it up with us to to carry forward and hold it close forever.
That reaching is what this work is about. These pieces live in that push and pull, of witnessing and creating. Painting, cyanotype, photography, all trying to freeze the in-between, into time capsules that bottle up how it all felt.
How it felt to watch your kids run through wildflowers on a sun dappled dirt path, how it felt to float on a lake at Golden hour with your Dad, how it felt to Ferry across the Salish Sea surrounded in layers of blue as you fell in love. How it felt to summit that peak with your brother, how it felt when your mom turned the sprinkler on in the backyard, and how it felt jumping off the dock with your closest friends. The Summer ends and we'll never relive those moments again, but maybe we can find a way to remind ourselves of them every day.
We don't know if you can hold a moment. We're not sure anyone can. But we keep trying, and this show is what that trying looks like. It's in all the shades of blue, a blur of light movement and emotion, it is both heart break and peace. It is that particular ache of light passing through something and leaving a trace behind.
Explored by Laura through cyanotypes - made from light and time - bits of nature pressed exposed to the sun, and through painting - chemistry and pigment blurring into each other. And by Devin through photography - bringing her camera into the spaces most people walk past without noticing, giving voice to the light, shadows and textures.
